About STIP

The CTB oversees the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), a four-year program that documents the allocation and obligation of federal transportation funding to individual projects or those that require approval from the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) or the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

Federal regulations require each state to produce a STIP at least once every four years. VDOT and DRPT update the STIP every three years to ensure the program never lapses. Virginia prioritizes opportunities for the public to provide input on transportation projects and priorities as part of the planning process for the development of the STIP.

The STIP includes all projects in an urbanized area that are included in an Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Transportation Improvement Program (MPO’s TIP). The STIP is comprised of all of the MPO TIPs as well as federally funded projects in the rural areas of Virginia.
